Goodwin Canyon - 10/31/09

Well, I had to make one last effort on the lower Stanislaus River before it closed to fishing for the year. So I spent Saturday morning up at Goodwin Canyon and fished from about 7:30-11:30. It was a crisp morning, but turned out to be a beautiful day once the sun hit the water. Fishing was excellent - it is too bad that this will be the last day of fishing Goodwin Canyon in 2009. The fish were hot on small black zebra midge type patterns this morning size 20 and smaller. I landed a few fish on dries once the sun came out around 11:00 am or so - a nice way to end the season!

Enjoy the few photos that I took that day....more to come in 2010 from the lower Stanislaus River and Goodwin Canyon!

Goodwin Canyon - 09/09/09

Today I fished the Goodwin Canyon reach of the lower Stanislaus River below Goodwin Dam. Goodwin Dam is the uppermost limit that anadromous fish can migrate and can be a great fishery throughout the year - depending on flow of course. The flow was down to 200 cfs today (it is schedule to increase to 700 cfs on Friday). The river is at its lowest during the month of September and can be a great time to get out and fish the canyon section.

I fished for about 3 hours today and was able to land 9 fish; including a 17" beauty! The fish seemed to be very selective today for small black flies.
